Stoke Say is best known for a remarkable old fortified manor house called Stoke say Castle, which isn’t really a castle in the traditional stronghold sense but a beautifully preserved medieval home that gives you a vivid sense of what life was like long ago. It was shaped by families of wool merchants and nobles, and its sturdy design has survived through centuries of English history including times of conflict.


The name Stokesay itself combines Stoke, meaning an enclosure or farm from old English origins, with Say, the family name of the early landowners — so the place name literally reflects its early identity.


Despite its small size today, Stoke Say appears in England’s ancient records dating back to when local land was recorded in the Domesday Book, showing it has been an established settlement for a very long time.
