Jarrow is a historic riverside town on the River Tyne in Northeast England.
It became an important centre of learning in the Anglo‑Saxon period thanks to the Monkwearmouth‑Jarrow Abbey, which was home to the Venerable Bede, one of the most famous scholars of early English history.
The monastery at Jarrow once had the largest library north of the Alps, thanks to the travels and collections of its founder Benedict Biscop.
The world’s oldest complete Latin Bible, known as the Codex Amiatinus, was originally produced at the Jarrow monastery in the 8th century.
St Paul’s Church in Jarrow contains one of the oldest church dedication stones in England, dating from 685 AD.
Today, part of the rich Anglo‑Saxon history of the town is brought to life at Jarrow Hall, a living history museum with a replica Anglo‑Saxon village and farm.
In 1936, Jarrow became famous for the Jarrow March (also called the Jarrow Crusade), when around 200 men walked nearly 300 miles to London to protest against unemployment and poverty during the Great Depression.
Jarrow’s history also includes centuries of industrial growth, with shipbuilding and coal mining forming the backbone of its economy through the 19th and early 20th centuries.
